A couple days ago my wife, daughter, and I were in the Publix near the townhouse we will be moving into next month to pick up some tea. I had been craving canned Sardines and Herring after reading an article about the last sardine packing plant in the US closing down. So over to the canned seafood aisle we went and I purchased an assortment of brands and cuts of canned, smoked, and kippered sardines and herring. I also grabbed a small tin of anchovies for the heck of it.

Here's my haul...

My catch of canned Sardines, Herring, & Anchovies made by Beach Cliff, Brunswick, and King Oscar brands.

The total for all 8 cans from Publix was $11.66. Pretty good deal as I have been eating a can for breakfast after my bowl of scrambled egg product. Canned Sardines, Herring, and Anchovies are a fairly healthy food. They are high in Omega 3 Fatty Acids in the healthy Fats, loaded with Protein and Calcium, no Carbs, and a decent supplement of Iron. It also helps that I absolutely love a nice piece of canned fish!

Here's a breakdown of the prices for the various brands and cuts:

Beach Cliff Bite Size Herring Fish Steaks: $0.95

Brunswick Sardines in Olive Oil: $1.25

Brunswick Sardines in Soybean Oil With Hot Peppers: $1.25

Brunswick Seafood Snacks Boneless Kippered Herring Fillets: $0.99

King Oscar Finest Brisling Sardines in Extra Virgin Olive Oil: $2.59

King Oscar Lightly Smoked Herring Fillet Kipper Snacks: $1.99

King Oscar Rolled Anchovies With Capers in Extra Virgin Olive Oil: $1.69

So which brands will taste the best? Is it worth it to pay for the premium brands like King Oscar? We shall see! I will be posting my reviews of each brand and cut. Hopefully this will help other canned seafood connoisseurs make your decision as you stare at a shelf piled with various brands and cuts of tinned treats!
