This will be my first review of a canned seafood product. Exciting isn't it! I love canned sardines and herring, but not all canned fish is created equal!
Let's take a look at Beach Cliff Bite Size Herring Fish Steaks in Soybean Oil. Here's how it comes on the shelf:
A can of Beach Cliff Bite Size Herring Fish Steaks in Soybean Oil.
As you can see they don't mess around with the fancy packaging on the outside of the can. It's also only $0.95 which is cheaper than the other brands, maybe there is a connection there? Is this a bargain basement sub-par product? We shall see! Here's what's inside the can:
Canned Herring cut as steaks made by Beach Cliff.
As you can see there are 7 decent size Herring Steaks in the can. Hopefully you can see from the picture that they are in pretty good shape and haven't disintegrated in the can. They didn't have an unpleasant smell like I have experienced with some brands. Obviously it's a fishy smell, but it didn't smell like day old cut bait on the pier, which is always a good sign!
At first I tried scooping out a whole steak with my fork, but that was a futile effort. They come out of the can as half a steak, the two halves just don't hold together. But the flavor is delicious! It is a mild, slightly smokey, slightly salty, not too fishy flavor. I have had canned fish that is ferociously fishy, like cat food or something. This is not one of them. Just as I normally would, I ate these by themselves with no crackers or sauce.
As you can see these are not deboned. The bones are actually a pleasant part of these herring steaks. They add a bit of crunch but are not chewy in the least. They disintegrate while being chewed about as easily as the fish itself.

- yes, they are good!
Yeah, I've known about the Beach Cliff bite size herring in the can for years, and I love 'em, but I find the soy oil rather bland, and instead prefer the louisiana hot sauce or the ones in green chiles even better !
